A whimsical extension brings new life to a traditional home. On an exposed corner site in a heritage context, this semi detached dwelling had some unusual planning constraints stemming from its irregular layout and subdivision. Conservation of the primary frontage consolidated the new additions to the rear of the site where linear forms are arranged around a landscaped courtyard.
Core to the brief were connections between the exterior entertaining zone and the main living spaces through a permeable facade. Internally, a perforated steel staircase offers a playful and sculptural form as well as filtered light to the central part of the house. The new private upper level includes a screened main bedroom suite that maximises privacy between nearby dwellings whilst retreating inward to a private landscaped perimeter.
The colour-saturated interior palette was embraced by the creative owners in combination with bespoke details, handmade tiles and leadlight glass that reflect the personal nature of the project.
