Once a modest beach bungalow, this project retains and expands on previous ground level alterations. New upper level additions have been grafted onto the previous works, taking their cues from the angled and tapering forms.
New bedrooms and bathrooms are arranged within a folded steel-clad roof form whose shape is in direct response to complying development controls as a preferred process over Council DA. East and west glazed openings bookend the bedroom zone to provide deep solar penetration into the voluminous spaces whilst sunlight pierces the centre of the house to provide a moving shaft of natural light within the lower rooms throughout the day.
A street-facing balcony has been reinstated from what once was the old porch of the original house inviting a connection to the morning sun and the owner’s much-loved bottle tree. A landscaped roof garden above provides a green screen to the front bedroom.
New interiors work alongside the established natural palette by the previous architect (Fox Johnston Architects) in play with the owners' favourite colours and textures which emphasise the playful form of the building.
